The reactions of various metal carbonyl derivatives with the novel unsaturated tertiary phosphine 9-phenyl-9-phosphabicyclo[4.2.1]nonatriene (C8H8PC6H5) have been investigated. Cycloheptatrienetricarbonylmolybdenum reacts with C8H8PC6H5 at room temperature to give pale yellow cis-(C8H8PC6H5) 2Mo(CO)3 where one of the two ligands is bonded to the metal atom through its phosphorus atom and one of its double bonds. In all other complexes of C8H8PC6H5 prepared in this work, only the phosphorus atom of this ligand is bonded to the metal atom. Hexacarbonylchromium reacts with C8H8PC6H5 to form a mixture of (C8H8PC6H5)Cr(CO)5 and trans-(C8H8PC6H5) 2Cr(CO)4. Hexacarbonylmolybdenum reacts withC8H8PC6H5 to give a mixture of (C8H8PC6H5)Mo(CO)5 and cis-(C8H8PC6H5) 2Mo(CO)4; however, the latter compound is better prepared from C8H8PC6H5 and cycloheptatrienetricarbonylmolybdenum at 100°. The monosubstituted yellow iron complex (C8H8PC6H5)Fe(CO)4 may be prepared from Fe(CO)5 and C8H8PC6H5 and the deeper yellow, relatively unstable, disubstituted iron complex trans-(C8H8PC6H5) 2Fe(CO)3 from Fe2(CO)9 or C8H8Fe(CO)3 and C8H8PC6H5. The mercury derivatives Hg[Fe(CO)3NO]2 and Hg[Co(CO)4]2 react with C8H8PC6H5 to form orange Hg[Fe(CO)2(NO)(C8H8PC6H 5)]2 and yellow Hg[Co(CO)3(C8H8PC6H 5)]2, respectively.
