η²-Phosphinocarbene complexes of tungsten show a different behaviour towards anionic nucleophiles. The cationic η²-phosphinocarbene complex [Cp(CO)₂W=C(Tol)PPh₂][BPh₄] reacts with the thiophenolate anion PhS^- via carbonyl substitution, whereas the corresponding trimethylphosphine substituted carbene complex [Cp(CO)(PMe₃)W=C(Tol)PPh₂][BF₄] adds the cyclopentadienyl anion at the carbene carbon atom. A third reaction pathway is observed on treating [Cp(CO)₂W=C(Me)PPh₂][BPh₄] with lithium diethylamide, providing a neutral η²-phosphinovinyl complex.
