Convenient synthesis of hetero decalins

A novel synthesis of heterodecalins has been achieved through Baylis-Hillman reaction of 2-formyl-4,4-dimethylcyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one (1) with unsaturated vinyl systems, followed by allylic migration of hydroxyl group and cyclization or benzyl amine addition to yield the oxa- and aza- decalins respectively.
