New quinolones 3, 6 and 9 annelated to either a 5-membered or a 6-membered lactose were designed as hybrids of antibacterial 4-quinolones and antitumor epipodophyllotoxin derivatives. They were synthesized using ethyl 2-ethenyl-4-hydroxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylate 2 as a key intermediate.
