A convenient (E)-stereoselective synthesis of alkenylphosphonates

Diethyl (E)-alkenylphosphonates have been prepared stereoselectively by dehydration of the corresponding β-hydroxyphosphonates using DCC/CuCl₂ in refluxing toluene. Starting β-hydroxyphosphonates were obtained in high yield from diethyl methylphosphonate.
