Treatment of [(η5-C5R5)Ru(L)2]BF4 (R ) Me, (L)2 ) dppe; R ) H, (L)2 ) (PPh3)2) with 0.45
equiv of HCtCCH(OH)CtCH led to the formation of the C5H2-bridged compounds [(η5-
C5R5)(L)2RudCdCdCHCHdCdRu(L)2(η5-C5R5)](BF4)2. The C5H2-bridged compounds reacted
with alumina to give the C5H-bridged compounds [(η5-C5R5)(L)2RudCdCdCHCtCRu(L)2-
(η5-C5R5)]BF4. The structure of the C5H-bridged complex [Cp(PPh3)2RudCdCdCHCtCRu-
(PPh3)2Cp]BPh4 has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction and shows the bridging C5H ligand
to be symmetric with a delocalized π-system. Reaction of [(η5-C5R5)(L)2RudCdCdCHCtCRu-
(L)2(η5-C5R5)]BF4 with acetone in the presence of KOH or KOBut produced (η5-C5R5)(L)2-
RuCtCCH(CH2COMe)CtCRu(L)2(η5-C5R5).

Despite the fact that a large number of conjugated
bimetallic organometallic complexes have been reported,
there are still very limited bimetallic complexes with
conjugated hydrocarbon chains of odd numbers of carbon
atoms linking two metal centers. To this end, we have
investigated the reactions of HCtCCH(OH)CtCH with
[CpRu(PPh3)2]+ and [Cp*Ru(dppe)]+. Reactions of
1-alkynols with [(C5R5)Ru(L)2]+ and other coordinatively
unsaturated ruthenium(II) complexes have been inten-
sively studied.9 These reactions can lead to the forma-
tion of hydroxyvinylidenes,10 allenylidenes,11-14 vinylvi-
nylidenes,15 and other unusual coupling products,16
Bimetallic organometallic compounds with π-conju-
gated bridges have recently attracted considerable at-
tention, because of their unusual intrinsic chemical,
physical, and material properties.1,2 A large number of
interesting conjugated organometallic bimetallic com-
plexes without metal-metal bonding have been re-
ported, including those with Cx-bridged complexes Ln-
MCxM′Ln′,3,4 (CH)x-bridged complexes,5 C4R2-bridged
complexes with MtC linkages such as [(Me3SiNCH2-
CH2)3N]MotCCHdCHCtMo[N(CH2CH2NSiMe3)3]6 or
complexes with MdC linkages such as [(C5H4SiMe3)2-
(CO)NbdCdCMe-CMedCdNb(CO)(C5H 4SiMe3)2]-
(BPh4)2,7 and 1,3-bimetalated cyclobutenylidene (C4R3)
complexes.8
