Upon irradiation N-methylmethacrylimide (1a) cyclized to give cis-1,3,5-trimethyl-3-azabicyclo<3.2.0>heptane-2,4-dione (2a) in a yield of 66percent. 2a gave 1,2-dimethylcyclobutane-cis-1,2-dicarboxylic acid by alkaline hydrolysis.Several other acrylimide derivatives were found to give similar results upon irradiation
