Single crystal X-ray structure determinations of the Michaelis-Arbuzov intermediates Ph2Me(Bu^tCH2O)P⁺Br^- and PhMe(Bu^tCH2O)2P⁺Br^- clearly demonstrate that these species are four-co-ordinate phosphonium salts.
