The novel decamethylruthenicenium cation <1>⁺ undergoes a facile deprotonation/oxidation reaction to yield a tetramethylfulvene cation *C5Me4-exo-CH2>⁺ (Cp^*=η⁵-C5Me5), <2>⁺, together with neutral 1.The reaction is promoted by weakly coordinating Lewis bases such as Cl^-. <2>⁺ is also generated by hydride abstraction from 1 with Ph3CBF4.Addition of nucleophiles Nu to <2>⁺ gives neutral complexes RuCp^*C5Me4CH2Nu (Nu=R2NH, ROH or OH^-).The mechanism of formation of <2>⁺ is discussed with reference to electrochemically evaluated redox properties of the species involved.
