A new preparation of esters from carbonyl compounds following lithium aluminum hydride reduction

A modified work-up procedure for the lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH₄) reduction of esters and other carbonyl compounds is described. The one pot procedure converts an ester to its 'homo-reverse ester' and other carbonyl compounds to esters. The key step is trapping the resulting intermediate aluminum alkoxide during reflux with an ester.
