4. Conclusions
Formation kinetics of the [Eu(H2O)(do3ap)]2ꢀ complex
was studied and the results show that the reactivity is simi-
lar to that observed in the europium(III)-H4dota system.
TRLIFS, as a new experimental tool for the study of such
chemical reactions, seems to be suitable for kinetic investi-
gations. It can be used for the detailed study of the reaction
mechanism of complex formation, also in cases when this
process is a multistep one. This methodology has some
limitations for the study of the reaction mechanism of com-
plex dissociation as this method gives reliable results in the
case where the number of coordinated water molecules
changes during the course of the reaction. Kinetic con-
stants obtained by UV–Vis spectroscopy and TRLIFS
are comparable. The bifunctional phosphinate ligand
H5do3apPrA shows similar chemical properties towards
europium(III) as do H4dota and H5do3ap.
