conversion over CeMn nanoparticles exhibited higher values than
that over NiAl and CeAl, and this behaviour was quite similar
synergetic effect previously observed when silica is present was
restrained herein and activity of the solids was low due to sintering
relatively high temperature reactions [6]. With regard to the prod-
ucts distribution, 1-hydroxyacetone was formed in major amounts.
Others contain allyl alcohol, acetic acid, propanediols, cyclic-ether
products, gases and unknown products, as previously observed
Thus, stability of the solids depends on the silica presence and
good catalytic activity was attributed to a high concentration of
surface defects and large amounts of Ce and Mn ions on the sur-
face of the material that were stabilised by silica, as for silica-based
compounds [51]. Hence, Ce coupled Mn ions limit nanoparticles
sintering, which results in high activity over time on stream.

High surface area silica-containing CeMn, NiAl and CeAl
nanocomposites were produced in the present study. Residual sil-
ica stabilised the nanoparticles of the oxides, and materials with
distinct phases, good textural properties and basic sites with dis-
tinct strengths and accessibilities were obtained. NiAl and CeAl
catalysts were less effective in the dehydration of glycerol due to
the relatively low number and accessibility of the basic sites. Syn-
ergistic effects were observed between cerium and manganese,
particularly when SiO2 was used. As a result, the activity of the
catalysts was greater than that of cerium and aluminium or nickel
and aluminium catalysts. CeO2, Mn2O3, and MnO2 phases gen-
erated surface defects, and the relatively high number of cerium
and manganese species on the surface of the material enhanced
glycerol dehydration due to the formation of acrolein and 1-
hydroxyacetone at 250 ◦C. Moreover, the sintering of cerium and
manganese nanoparticles was limited due to the silica presence
and the activity and stability of the catalyst over time on stream
was high.
