1-R-3-Methyl-2,3-epoxybutanes have been found to react with trifluoroacetic anhydride at 20-40 deg C in the absence of a catalyst to give mixtures of the ditrifluoroacetate and the product of substitutive O-acylation.The formation of the latter is favored by raising the temperature.The reaction mechanism is discussed.
