In order to investigate the relationship between the
chemical component of the char layer and the flame
retardant properties, the chemical composition of the
residual char surface of pure EP/PDA and EP/40 wt%
DPDHPP/60 wt% PDA thermosets after cone calorimeter
tests were analyzed by XPS. The relative data are listed
in Table VI. The relative content of P in the char residue
surface of EP/40 wt% DPDHPP/60 wt% PDA thermosets
is observed to increase from 0 for pure EP to 1.64% due
to the incorporation of DPDHPP additive with abundant
P–C bonds in the epoxy resins matrix. The change of the
above relative content of P is aroused by the introduc-

. CONCLUSIONS
A novel phosphorus-containing curing agent DPDHPP
with P–C bonds was successfully synthesized, and the
obtained DPDHPP combined with PDA with different
mass fractions was used as curing agent to prepare flame
retardant epoxy resins. The EP/40 wt% DPDHPP/60 wt%
PDA composites successfully passed the UL-94 V-0
flammability rating and its LOI value was as high as

epoxy resins matrix to be decomposed and char form-
ing ahead of time, enhanced the char yield and thermal
stability of EP thermosets at high temperatures. More-
over, the moisture absorption of epoxy resins was grad-
ually decreased with increasing the DPDHPP content in
thermosets due to the existence of the rigid hydrophobic
aromatic structure with water resistance and in DPDHPP
structure, and the thermosets still maintained excellent
flame retardancy after water resistance test. The introduc-
tion of DPDHPP promoted epoxy resins thermosets form-
ing continuous and compact char layer, which inhibited
the emission of smoke and combustible volatiles, reduced
the heat transmission and the rate of heat release during
