ELECTRON ADDITION TO HALOGEN DERIVATIVES OF IMIDAZOLES

Exposure of various bromo- and iodo-imidazoles as dilute solutions in methanol or methyltetrahydrofuran at 77 K to ⁶⁰Co γ-rays resulted in electron addition to yield major species which were not the expected ?^* radical anions but ?^* radical anions, the SOMO being primarily the C-hal ?^* orbital with little delocalisation.
