The kinetics of oxidation of phenylacetylene by thallium(III) has been studied in aqueous solution.The reaction proceeds by two consecutive steps: rapid formation of an intermediate oxythallation compound, C6H5C(OH)=CHTl2+, followed by its much slower oxidative decomposition.The kinetics and mechanism of these reactions are discussed and compared to those observed in thallic ion oxidation of styrene.
