The SCR of NO and NO2 by NH3 over a series of HZSM-5 catalysts, which were modified by mild steaming and by sodium exchange, was studied. Mild steaming of a HZSM-5 catalyst increased its activity for the reduction of NO by NH3. A slight decrease (from 52 to 47 kJ/mole) in apparent activation energy was observed. Mild steaming increased the rate constants for SCR and NH3 oxidation by about a factor of two but did not change the ammonia adsorption constant. The activity of a series of ZSM-5 catalysts containing varying amounts of sodium for NO reduction was weakly dependent on the Na level. The extent of sodium exchange strongly influenced the activity of the catalysts for NO2 reduction; although the fully exchanged sample was still active for this reaction, it was ≤ 20 times less active than catalysts containing less sodium. The framework and extra-framework acid sites were suggested to be active for the reduction of NO2.
