  Based on natural product 1, compounds 5–17 having dialkyl substitutions on C-3 of 3 or 4 were synthesized as depicted in Scheme 2. The C-3 di-alkylation of 3 or 4 was achieved in a single step by heating with lithium hydroxide and excess of alkyl halides in water at 80 °C.
