  To interpret the reaction pathway, several control experiments were performed (Scheme 3). Firstly, under the standard reaction conditions, when the reaction of N-benzyl 2-naphthylamine with elemental sulfur was performed in 4 hours,  the imine 2aa could be detected from the reaction mixture by  GC-MS analysis (see the SI for details).
