Azide technology of SHS (SHS–Az) is based on the use of a solid powder of an azide (such as NaN3) as a nitriding reagent in the SHS process instead of gaseous or liquid nitrogen for synthesis of nitrogen-containing compounds. Sodium vapors also play a positive role by reducing the oxides on the surface of the powder of the initial element and thereby purifying it. In recent years, much attention has been paid to the application of SHS–Az technology for obtaining of nanosized powders of nitrides.
