The conversion of CARBON DIOXIDE (cas 124-38-9) (CO2) into fuels using solar energy have been studied extensively since it is very attractive in that this can provide a solution to both problems of the increasing carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and the finding new energy sources. Various materials have been explored to improve the solar to energy conversion efficiencies for photocatalysts or photoelectrodes in light-assisted photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems. Although lots of progress have been, the efficiencies still need to be increased for future commercial applications. This review is focused on the recent works related to III-V semiconductors, oxide semiconductors and perovskites materials and the achievement by modifying the physical and chemical properties of these materials. Photovoltaic cell biased PEC system in which the absorption subsystem and the reduction subsystem can be optimized independently is described and a prospect in the CO2 photoconversion systems is discussed.
