- Bottom-Up Construction of Mesoporous Nanotubes from 78-Component Self-Assembled Nanobarrels

Segmental and continuous hexagonal-packed mesoporous metal-organic nanotubes (MMONTs) with outside diameters of up to 4.5 nm and channel sizes of 2.4 nm were hierarchically constructed by a rational multicomponent self-assembly process involving starting from [L2Pd2(NO3)2] (L=o-phenanthroline or 2,2′-bipyridine) and 4-pyridinyl-3-pyrazole. An unprecedented crystallization-driven cross-linking between discrete nanobarrel building units by spontaneous loss of the capping ligands to form infinite nanotubes was observed. Such a barrel-to-tube transformation provides new possibilities for the fabrication of MMONTs using the solution bottom-up approach.

A uniqueN,O-bidentate ligand 6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyridone-2-carboxylic acid dimethylamide (L1) catalyzed direct C(sp2)-H (intra/intermolecular) arylation of unactivated arenes has been developed to expedite access to (Het)biaryl scaffolds under UV-irradiation at room temperature. The protocol tolerated diverse functional groups and substitution patterns, affording the target products in moderate to excellent yields. Mechanistic investigations were also carried out to better understand the reaction pathway. - Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction with Potassium Aryltrifluoroborate in Pure Water Using Recyclable Nanoparticle Catalyst

This paper describes the Suzuki Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of aryl bromides with potassium aryltrifluoroborates in water catalyzed by linear polystyrene-stabilized PdO nanoparticles (PSPdONPs). The reaction of aryl bromides having electron-withdrawing groups or electron-donating groups took place smoothly to give the corresponding coupling product in high yields. The catalyst recycles five times without significant loss of catalytic activity although a little bit increase in size of PdNPs was observed after the reaction.

- Rhodium-Catalyzed Additive-Free C?H Ethoxycarbonylation of (Hetero)Arenes with Diethyl Dicarbonate as a CO Surrogate

A rhodium-catalyzed C(sp2)-H ethoxycarbonylation of indoles and arylpyridines using diethyl dicarbonate was developed. The catalytic process features an additive-free ethoxycarbonylation reaction, in which only ethanol and CO2 are produced as byproducts, providing a CO-free and operationally simple protocol. The introduced ethoxycarbonyl group is easily transformed into other ester and amide functionalities in a single step. Moreover, the reaction can be successfully applied on gram scale, and allows for the efficient synthesis of indole-2-carboxylic acid esters and isophthalates.

A novel nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling between aryl iodides and difluoromethyl 2-pyridyl sulfone (2-PySO2CF2H) enables C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond formation through selective C(sp2)-S bond cleavage, which demonstrates the new reactivity of 2-PySO2CF2H reagent. This method employs readily available nickel catalyst and sulfones as cross-electrophile coupling partners, providing facile access to biaryls under mild reaction conditions without pregeneration of arylmetal reagents.

- Base-Activated Latent Heteroaromatic Sulfinates as Nucleophilic Coupling Partners in Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions

Heteroaromatic sulfinates are effective nucleophilic reagents in Pd0-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with aryl halides. However, metal sulfinate salts can be challenging to purify, solubilize in reaction media, and are not tolerant to multi-step transformations. Here we introduce base-activated, latent sulfinate reagents: β-nitrile and β-ester sulfones. We show that under the cross-coupling conditions, these species generate the sulfinate salt in situ, which then undergo efficient palladium-catalyzed desulfinative cross-coupling with (hetero)aryl bromides to deliver a broad range of biaryls. These latent sulfinate reagents have proven to be stable through multi-step substrate elaboration, and amenable to scale-up.

- New Nickel-Based Catalytic System with Pincer Pyrrole-Functionalized N-Heterocyclic Carbene as Ligand for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reactions

A new catalytic system with Ni(NO3)2·6H2O as the catalyst and a pincer pyrrole-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene as the ligand was employed in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl iodides with arylboronic acids. With 5 mol% catalyst, the catalytic reactions proceeded at 160 °C, giving coupling products in isolated yields of up to 94% in short reaction times (1-4 h). The system worked efficiently with aryl iodides bearing electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups and arylboronic acids with electron-donating groups. Steric effects were observed for both aryl iodides and arylboronic acids. It is proposed that the reactions underwent a Ni(I)/Ni(III) catalytic cycle.

- C(sp2)-C(sp2) Suzuki cross-coupling of arylammonium salts catalyzed by a stable Pd–NHC complex

We have developed the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl ammonium salts via C–N bond activation catalyzed by an easily prepared and bench-stable palladium-N-heterocyclic carbene complex. The reaction proceeded well under mild conditions with phenylboronic acid, pinacol ester or anhydride and provided yields of products up to 97% with good functional group compatibility. The direct arylation of arylamine can be performed by a two-step one-pot process and the protocol can be performed on the gram scale.

- Practical and Regioselective Synthesis of C-4-Alkylated Pyridines
-
The direct position-selective C-4 alkylation of pyridines has been a long-standing challenge in heterocyclic chemistry, particularly from pyridine itself. Historically this has been addressed using prefunctionalized materials to avoid overalkylation and mixtures of regioisomers. This study reports the invention of a simple maleate-derived blocking group for pyridines that enables exquisite control for Minisci-type decarboxylative alkylation at C-4 that allows for inexpensive access to these valuable building blocks. The method is employed on a variety of different pyridines and carboxylic acid alkyl donors, is operationally simple and scalable, and is applied to access known structures in a rapid and inexpensive fashion. Finally, this work points to an interesting strategic departure for the use of Minisci chemistry at the earliest possible stage (native pyridine) rather than current dogma that almost exclusively employs Minisci chemistry as a late-stage functionalization technique.

The preparation and characterization of a series of new 2-phenylpyridine derivative ligands consisting of 2-(R) pyridine (R = mesityl (L1), 2,6-dimethylphenyl (L2), o-tolyl (L3), m-tolyl (L4), p-tolyl (L5), o-methoxyphenyl (L6), and p-methoxyphenyl (L7)) and their Pd complexes [PdCl2L2] (L1–L7) is investigated using a combination of X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, GC-MS, and NMR. The crystal structures show that the Pd complexes adopt a square planar geometry, and the monodentate ligand is coordinated through the N donor of the pyridine ring to the Pd atom. The catalytic activities of the synthesized complexes are investigated. The square planar Pd complex trans-[(2-mesitylpy)2PdCl2)] shows a high efficiency in promoting Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling in an aqueous solvent under aerobic conditions.

- Exhaustive Reduction of Esters Enabled by Nickel Catalysis

We report a one-step procedure to directly reduce unactivated aryl esters into their corresponding tolyl derivatives. This is achieved by an organosilane-mediated ester hydrosilylation reaction and subsequent Ni/NHC-catalyzed hydrogenolysis. The resulting conditions provide a direct and efficient alternative to multi-step procedures for this transformation that often require the use of hazardous metal hydrides. Applications in the synthesis of -CD3-containing products, derivatization of bioactive molecules, and chemoselective reduction in the presence of other C-O bonds are demonstrated.

- A novel and robust heterogeneous Cu catalyst using modified lignosulfonate as support for the synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles

A waste biomass, sodium lignosulfonate, was treated with sodium 2-formylbenzenesulfonate, and the phenylaldehyde condensation product was then used as a robust supporting material to immobilize a copper species. The so-obtained catalyst was characterized by many physicochemical methods including FTIR, EA, FSEM, FTEM, XPS, and TG. This catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles such as tricyclic indoles bearing 3,4-fused seven-membered rings, 2-arylpyridines, aminonaphthalenes and 3-phenylisoquinolines. In addition, this catalyst showed to be recyclable and could be reused several times without significant loss in activity during the course of the reaction process.

NiCl2(dppp) in PEG-400 is shown to be a highly efficient catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl chlorides with arylboronic acids. The reaction could be conducted at 100 °C using K3PO4 as base, yielding a variety of biaryls in good to excellent yields. The isolation of the products was readily performed by extraction with petroleum ether and NiCl2(dppp)/PEG-400 system could be easily recycled and reused up to five times without significant loss of activity. Our system not only avoids the use of easily volatile and toxic dioxane or toluene as a solvent but also solves the basic problem of nickel catalyst reuse.

- Efficient construction of C–C bonds from aryl halides/aryl esters with arylboronic acids catalysed by palladium(II) thiourea complexes

A new set of palladium(II) complexes comprising phenyl(thiazolyl)thiourea ligands have been successfully synthesized and characterized with the aid of analytical as well as spectral (IR, UV–visible and NMR) methods. A distorted square-planar geometry with N^S coordination mode of thiourea ligands in the new palladium complexes was corroborated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Interestingly, the palladium(II) thiourea complexes showed the highest catalytic activity with 0.1 mol% catalyst loading in Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions utilizing a range of aryl bromides/unactivated aryl chlorides with arylboronic acids as coupling partners in aqueous–organic media. Syntheses of diaryl ketones using aryl esters and arylboronic acids as coupling partners were also achieved with low catalyst loading within 20 h. The potential of our catalyst was demonstrated by its wide substrate scope, low catalyst loadings and high isolated yield. Moreover, the influences of key parameters like solvent, base, temperature and catalyst loading were also investigated.

- Multicomponent Aromatic and Benzylic Mannich Reactions through C?H Bond Activation

Multicomponent Mannich reactions through C?H bond activation are described. These transformations allowed for the straightforward generation of densely substituted benzylic and homo-benzylic amines in good yields. The reaction involves a reaction between two transient species: an organometallic species, generated by transition-metal-catalyzed sp2 or sp3 C?H bond activation and an in situ generated imine. The use of an acetal as an aldehyde surrogate was found essential for the reaction to proceed. The process could be successfully applied to RhIII-catalyzed sp2 C?H bond functionalization and extended to CuII-catalyzed sp3 C?H bond functionalization.

A metal-free methodology for the photoarylation of pyridines, in water, is described giving 2 and 4-arylated-pyridines in yields up to 96percent. The scope of the aryldiazonium salts is presented showing important results depending on the nature and position of the substituent group in the diazonium salt, that is, electron-donating or electron-withdrawing in the ortho, meta, or para positions. Further heteroaromatics were also successfully photoarylated. - Metal-Free Aryl Cross-Coupling Directed by Traceless Linkers
-
The metal-free, highly selective synthesis of biaryls poses a major challenge in organic synthesis. The scope and mechanism of a promising new approach to (hetero)biaryls by the photochemical fusion of aryl substituents tethered to a traceless sulfonamide linker (photosplicing) are reported. Interrogating photosplicing with varying reaction conditions and comparison of diverse synthetic probes (40 examples, including a suite of heterocycles) showed that the reaction has a surprisingly broad scope and involves neither metals nor radicals. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the C?C bond is formed by an intramolecular photochemical process that involves an excited singlet state and traversal of a five-membered transition state, and thus consistent ipso–ipso coupling results. These results demonstrate that photosplicing is a unique aryl cross-coupling method in the excited state that can be applied to synthesize a broad range of biaryls.

- Ruthenium-Catalyzed Reductive Cleavage of Unstrained Aryl-Aryl Bonds: Reaction Development and Mechanistic Study

Cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds has been found in some important industrial processes, for example, petroleum cracking, and has inspired development of numerous synthetic methods. However, nonpolar unstrained C(aryl)-C(aryl) bonds remain one of the toughest bonds to be activated. As a detailed study of a fundamental reaction mode, here a full story is described about our development of a Ru-catalyzed reductive cleavage of unstrained C(aryl)-C(aryl) bonds. A wide range of biaryl compounds that contain directing groups (DGs) at 2,2′ positions can serve as effective substrates. Various heterocycles, such as pyridine, quinoline, pyrimidine, and pyrazole, can be employed as DGs. Besides hydrogen gas, other reagents, such as Hantzsch ester, silanes, and alcohols, can be employed as terminal reductants. The reaction is pH neutral and free of oxidants; thus a number of functional groups are tolerated. Notably, a one-pot C-C activation/C-C coupling has been realized. Computational and experimental mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction involves a ruthenium(II) monohydride-mediated C(aryl)-C(aryl) activation and the resting state of the catalyst is a η4-coordinated ruthenium(II) dichloride complex, which could inspire development of other transformations based on this reaction mode.

The reversibility of the concerted metalation-deprotonation exchange of eight para-substituted phenylpyridines is examined with the parent Cp*RhCl(κ-C,N-NC5H4-C6H4). Equilibrium constants are determined, and the free energies are used to extract the most important parameters that control the thermodynamics. Keq values are found to correlate best with heterolytic C-H bond strengths but in a way that is not obvious considering the electrophilic nature of these activations.

- Perylenequinonoid-catalyzed photoredox activation for the direct arylation of (het)arenes with sunlight
-
Naturally occurring perylenequinonoid pigments (PQPs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their excellent properties of photosensitization. They have been widely investigated as an aspect of photophysics and photobiology. However, their applications in photocatalysis are yet to be explored. We report here that sunlight along with 1 mol% cercosporin, which is one of the perylenequinonoid pigments, catalyzes the direct C-H bond arylation of (het)arenes by a photoredox process with good regioselectivity and broad functional group compatibility. Furthermore, a gram-scale reaction with great conversions of substrates was achieved even by a cercosporin-containing supernatant without organic solvent extraction and purification after liquid fermentation. Thus we set up a bridge between microbial fermentation and organic photocatalysis for chemical reactions in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner.

- Dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene based palladium(ii)/NHC catalysts-synthesis and applications in C-C bond formation

In the quest for a new ligand system for Pd(ii)/NHCs, we developed new dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene based palladium N-heterocyclic carbene catalysts D1-D6 in good yields. All the catalysts were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and HRMS. The X-ray crystal structure of the representative dibenzothiophene based Pd(ii)/NHC D4 was determined. Among the precatalysts, D1 was shown to be highly effective in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of heterocyclic bromides with boronic acids. Besides, D1 affords diverse arylated benzoxazoles via direct C-H bond functionalization with substituted bromo derivatives.

- Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling for efficient synthesis of aryl-substituted N-heteroarenes catalyzed by recyclable N-phenylpiperazine-Palladium(II) complex

Polystyrene supported N-phenylpiperazine-Pd(II) complex D was synthesized and characterized by various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and thermal analysis (TG-DTA). This heterogeneous Pd(II) complex showed high catalytic efficiency for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of arylboronic acids with aryl bromides, aryl chlorides to give the corresponding 2-arylpyridines and heteroarenes. The coupled products were formed in excellent yields at low catalyst loadings under mild reaction conditions. Further, this heterogeneous catalyst showed excellent recyclability and reused for four cycles with no significant decrease in its activity.

New dimeric palladium 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene complexes of the general formula [{Pd(μ-Cl)Cl(tzNHC)}2] (tzNHC = 1-mesityl-3-methyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene; 1-hexyl-3-methyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene and 1-butyl-3-methyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray analysis and DFT calculations. For the mesityl substituted complex, the crystallographic structures of both the cisoidal and transoidal isomer were obtained. In the presence of an excess of 4-tolylboronic acid, the loss of the tzNHC ligand from the palladium coordination sphere as a 5-tolyltriazolium salt was observed. The complexes are precursors of palladium species catalytically active in the coupling of arylboronic acids with aryl bromides.

A unique recyclable Pd catalyst (‘SiO2’-NH2-Pd) for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of azaheteroaryl halides is developed. The catalytic system is working under mild aqueous condition with low Pd loading and without the use of phosphine ligand. The plausible mechanism is proposed based on the formation of undesired symmetrical biaryl from the coupling reaction of azaheteroaryl chlorides due to the oxidative homocoupling of nucleophilic arylboronic acid. This catalytic system represents an attractive and promising approach for the synthesis of azaheterobiaryls with high product yields. The catalyst has demonstrated an excellent recyclability.

- Facile one-pot nanocatalysts encapsulation of palladium-NHC complexes for aqueous Suzuki-Miyaura couplings

Organic transformations using water as the solvent have been the focus of intense investigation. We herein present a strategy that uses simple nanoparticle encapsulation to fabricate water-soluble nanocatalysts (NCs) for aqueous cross-coupling reactions. To achieve this goal, three types of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-palladium (Pd) complexes (i.e., 1b, 2b, and 3b) with the chemical formula [PdL(CH3CN)Cl]PF6 (where L is a bidentate pyridine- or pyrimidine-bearing NHC ligand) have been synthesized, and their structures were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Exploiting a facile one-pot encapsulation process, the water-insoluble Pd-NHC complexes can be integrated into the hydrophobic cores of micelles composed of an amphiphilic copolymer. These water-dispersed nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic activity in aqueous Suzuki-Miyaura couplings. Among these NCs, 3b-NC, bearing a mesityl moiety on its NHC ligand, was found to be the most active catalyst under the tested reaction conditions. More impressively, 3b-NC can be reused for at least five cycles without substantial loss of catalytic activity.

- C6-Selective Direct Arylation of 2-Phenylpyridine via an Activated N-methylpyridinium Salt: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

An elegant pre-activation strategy, based on the formation of N-methylpyridinium iodide salts for C6-selective direct arylation of 2-phenylpyridines using Pd/Cu cooperative catalysis, has been developed. By this methodology, a wide range of unsymmetrical 2, 6-diarylpyridines were synthesized with high reactivity and regioselectivity as well as good functional group tolerance. In particular, challenging substrates bearing electron donating groups (EDGs), such as OMe, NMe2, were also successfully employed in this reaction. Deuterium incorporation studies revealed that the C?H bond acidity is improved significantly in N-methylpyridinium salts compared with their N-Oxide and N-iminopyridinium ylide counterparts, thus solving the long-standing problem associated with previous strategies for the synthesis of diaryl pyridines. Finally, the control experiments and DFT calculations supported a Pd-catalyzed and Cu-mediated mechanism in which a carbenoid copper species that is formed in-situ from N-methylpyridinium salts, participates in a Pd-catalyzed arylation followed by an iodide-promoted N-demethylation process. - Heterocyclic Allylsulfones as Latent Heteroaryl Nucleophiles in Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions

Heterocyclic sulfinates are effective reagents in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions with aryl and heteroaryl halides, often providing high yields of the targeted biaryl. However, the preparation and purification of complex heterocylic sulfinates can be problematic. In addition, sulfinate functionality is not tolerant of the majority of synthetic transformations, making these reagents unsuitable for multistep elaboration. Herein, we show that heterocyclic allylsulfones can function as latent sulfinate reagents and, when treated with a Pd(0) catalyst and an aryl halide, undergo deallylation, followed by efficient desulfinylative cross-coupling. A broad range of allyl heteroarylsulfones are conveniently prepared, using several complementary routes, and are shown to be effective coupling partners with a variety of aryl and heteroaryl halides. We demonstrate that the allylsulfone functional group can tolerate a range of standard synthetic transformations, including orthogonal C- and N-coupling reactions, allowing multistep elaboration. The allylsulfones are successfully coupled with a variety of medicinally relevant substrates, demonstrating their applicability in demanding cross-coupling transformations. In addition, pharmaceutical agents crizotinib and etoricoxib were prepared using allyl heteroaryl sulfone coupling partners, further demonstrating the utility of these new reagents.

- An Iron-Based Long-Lived Catalyst for Direct C?H Arylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes

Direct C?H arylation of arenes and heteroarenes to biaryls at ambient temperature has been accomplished using a phenalenyl-supported iron(III) catalyst. The present catalyst requires a chemical reductant such as potassium and functions without any light stimulation. C?H arylation of various heteroarenes including pyridine as well as unactivated arene such as benzene delivered good to excellent yield (28 examples, up to 92 %) at room temperature. A combined effort based on experiments and theoretical calculations established that a phenalenyl-based radical species (generated by chemical reduction of the iron(III) coordinated phenalenyl complex) plays key role during the catalysis. Furthermore, this catalyst displayed remarkable stability during the catalysis, as evident from the fact that it was still usable over ten consecutive catalytic runs without losing its catalytic efficiency.

A facile, transition-metal-free, and direct decarboxylative arylation of 2-picolinic acids with simple arenes is described. The oxidative decarboxylative arylation of 2-picolinic acids with arenes proceeds readily via N-chloro carbene intermediates to afford 2-arylpyridines in satisfactory to good yields under transition-metal-free conditions. This new type of decarboxylative arylation is operationally simple and scalable and exhibits high functional-group tolerance. Various synthetically useful functional groups, such as halogen atoms, methoxycarbonyl, and nitro, remain intact during the decarboxylative arylation of 2-picolinic acids.

The ligand [2,2′-bipyridin]-6(1H)-one (bipy-6-OH) has a strong accelerating effect on the Pd-catalyzed direct arylation of pyridine or arenes. The isolation of relevant intermediates and the study of their decomposition unequivocally show that the deprotonated coordinated ligand acts as a base and assists the cleavage of the C-H bond. Mechanistic work indicates that the direct arylation of pyridine with this ligand occurs through a Pd(0)/Pd(II) cycle. Because of this dual ligand-intramolecular base role, there is no need for an available coordination site on the metal for an external base, a difficulty encountered when chelating ligands are used in coupling reactions that involve a C-H cleavage step.

Solvent-free protocols for palladium-catalyzed stannylation of aryl halides, Stille cross-coupling, and one-pot, two-step stannylation/Stille cross-coupling (SSC) are reported for the first time. (Het)aryl halides bearing acceptor, donor, as well as sterically demanding substituents are stannylated and/or coupled in high yields. The reactions are catalyzed by conventional palladium(II) acetate/PCy3 [Pd(OAc)2/PCy3] under air, using available base CsF, and without the use of high purity reagents. The developed synthetic procedures are versatile, robust, and easily scalable. The absence of solvent, and the elimination of isolation procedures of aryl stannanes makes the SSC protocol simple, step economical, and highly efficient for the synthesis of biaryls in a one-pot two-step procedure.
