Metal nitrates and nitrites
Metal nitrates and nitrites are chemical compounds containing metal ions bonded to nitrate (NO3-) or nitrite (NO2-) anions, respectively. Metal nitrates, such as sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2), are typically soluble in water and serve as sources of nitrate ions for various applications. They are widely used in agriculture as fertilizers to provide essential nitrogen for plant growth and in industrial processes as oxidizing agents, catalysts, and raw materials for producing other chemicals. Metal nitrites, like sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and potassium nitrite (KNO2), are less common but also soluble in water and exhibit different chemical properties compared to nitrates. Nitrites are primarily used in food preservation to inhibit bacterial growth and prevent spoilage, particularly in cured meats and fish products. Both metal nitrates and nitrites play significant roles in chemistry, agriculture, food industry, and other sectors due to their versatile applications and chemical reactivity involving nitrogen-containing compounds.
