Acyl halide
Acyl halides, also known as acid halides, are organic compounds derived from carboxylic acids by replacing the hydroxyl group (-OH) with a halogen atom (-Cl, -Br, -I). The general formula for acyl halides is RCOX, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group and X represents a halogen atom. These compounds are highly reactive due to the presence of the electrophilic carbonyl carbon and the electron-withdrawing nature of the halogen atom, which enhances their reactivity towards nucleophiles. Acyl halides are essential intermediates in organic synthesis, serving as precursors for the formation of amides, esters, and other carboxylic acid derivatives through nucleophilic substitution reactions.
