A Synthetic Entry into the Ophiobolane Ring System

A stereocontrolled construction of the angularly fused 5-8-5 ring system characteristic of the ophiobolin and ceroplastol sesterterpenes is reported.The synthesis is based on the elaboration of a cis-hydroazulene intermediate into the dicyclopenta cyclooctane system with control of relative stereochemistry at several critical centers.
