The potent antifungal and cytostatic antibiotic strobilurin E (1) has been obtained in 6 steps from 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (3) and the bromoketone 2. The strobilurin side chain was elaborated by three consecutive Wittig reactions and a photochemical double bond isomerisation.
