(22) Erosion of enantiomeric purity from 2a (99% ee) to 3 (80% ee)
is presumably due to partial migration of the less substituted double
bond into conjugation with the aromatic ring during the first hydro-
genation step. Hydrogenation of the resulting conjugated trisubstituted
