In the presence of water the unsaturated iridium(III) metallacyclopentadiene halide complex cyclo(PPh3)2Cl (1, R = CO2Me) undergoes reaction with prop-2-ynyl alcohol, or methyl prop-2-ynyl ether at room temperature to give the η¹-ethenyl complex cyclo(PPh3)2(CO)(η¹-CH=CH2) (3, R = CO2Me) in quantitative yield.
