Reactions of [Ru(thf)(PPh₃)₂(η-C₅H₅)][PF ₆] with buta-1,4-diyne in the presence of nucleophiles give alkenylvinylidene or allenylidene complexes; the results are rationalised in terms of the formation of the intermediate trienylidene cation [Ru(C=C=C=CH₂)-(PPh₃)₂(η-C ₅H₅)]⁺ which undergoes nucleophilic addition at Cγ; the X-ray structure of the heteroallenylidene [Ru{C=C=CMe(NPh₂)}(PPh₃)₂(η-C ₅H₅)][PF₆] 2 is determined.
