A mild and efficient method for the preparation of anilines from nitroarenes

Treatment of a variety of nitroaromatic compounds with N,N-dimethyl- hydrazine in the presence of catalytic FeCl₃·6H₂O in methanol results in excellent yields of the corresponding anilines. This reduction system is compatible with a wide assortment of functional groups.
