A new palladium-catalyzed P-C coupling reaction: Synthesis of triarylphosphine oxides and diarylmethylphosphine oxides

The first palladium-catalyzed P-C coupling reaction of aryl halides with (hydroxymethyl)phosphines is described. Hydroxymethylphosphines act as cheap and easy to use H₃PO and CH₃P(O)H₂ equivalents. Tertiary diarylmethylphosphine oxides 5 and triarylphosphine oxides 6 are accessible in a one pot reaction in overall yields between 45-60%.
