The Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzyl chloride and benzyl alcohol, separately as well as in a single pot, with toluene as an alkylating agent in presence of different solid acid catalysts has been investigated to find that the inversion of relative reactivities is due to a preferential adsorption phenomenon.
