The temperature dependence of the vapour pressure of GVL-
based ionic liquids was also determined. It was shown that the
structure of the cations had a significant effect on the vapour
pressure, while the GVL-based anions had a negligible influ-
ence on it.

22 The ionic liquids can also be prepared by applying 5%
excess of γ-valerolactone. The residue of GVL can easily be
removed by vacuum evaporation at 80 °C for 1 h. Due to
the excess of GVL no water soluble tetraalkylammonium
hydroxide was detected in the product (ESI Fig. S19†). If
necessary, the ILs can be further purified by washing with
diethyl ether, pentane, hexane, or cyclohexane.
