The products obtained by heating a mixture of Co//3O//4 and carbon in a SO//2 stream were CoO and CoSO//4 at 400-600 degree C, Co//1// minus //xS and CoO at 650-700 degree C, and Co//1// minus //xS (Co//0//. //9//0S) at 750-800 degree C. Sulfur was obtained outside the heating zone throughout the temperature range. The possible reactions during the above process were also examined. Further, thermodynamic consideration was made of the formation of Co//1// minus //xS. The formation process of Co//1// minus //xS (Co//0//. //9//0S) from Co//3O//4 can be represented as follows: The reaction of carbon with SO//2 occurs at first to form sulfur. Above ca. 400 degree C, the reaction of Co//3O//4 with SO//2 occurs to form CoO and CoSO//4. Above ca. 500 degree C, the reductions of Co//3O//4 with carbon and with sulfur also occur to form CoO. Above ca. 600//20 C, the reduction of CoSO//4 with carbon occurs to form CoO.
