4. Conclusions
The feasibility of performing the OHE reaction with bifunctional
mesoporous organic–inorganic hybrid silica (Pt/SBA15-PrSO3H)
catalyst was demonstrated. Due to its superior acidic site capacity,
this bifunctional hybrid catalyst has the potential of improving
OHE activity relative to previously discussed catalyst systems
hence becoming a candidate for the catalytic upgrading of bio-oil.
It was concluded that the synthesis procedure was crucial for the
performance of the bifunctional catalysts. The textural properties,
strong thiol-bonding interactions, platinum loading, choice of
reducing agent, and an apparent positive acid–metal interaction
were considered as key factors affecting the catalytic performance.
The characterization and catalytic tests both showed that
propylthiol groups should be incorporated and oxidized to
propylsulfonic acid groups before loading with platinum to avoid
the apparent strong thiol-bonding effect. A simple aqueous
reduction and deposition of platinum with sodium borohydride
and ethylene glycol as the reducing agent was found to be a
suitable method for activating the platinum. From the reaction
studies, it was found that the existence of the propylsulfonic acid
groups did not affect the hydrogenation activity of the platinum
sites, but that the platinum promoted the acidic strength of the
propylsulfonic acid groups. Further work is needed to better
characterize the apparent effect of platinum–sulfonic acid
interaction that was observed.
