The title nitrile, 3-(4-methylphenyl)-1-phenylpyrazole-5-acetonitrile, C18H15N3, is one of the products obtained from the reaction of 3-cyano-6-(4-methylphenyl)-4-methylthio-2-oxo-2H-pyran with phenylhydrazine.The asymmetric unit contains two almost identical molecules differing only in the orientations of the phenyl and methylphenyl groups with respect to the planar pyrazole nucleus.
