WSSs and WSOCs are denoted as water-soluble sugars except
glucose and water-soluble organic compounds (e.g., formic
acid, acetic acid, furfural, hydroxymethyl furfural), respectively.

Product analysis
The concentration of water-soluble sugars was analyzed using
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The anal-
ysis was performed using an Agilent series 1100 HPLC system
equipped with a refractive index detector (RID) and a Hypersil
ODS column at 30 ꢁC for qualitative and quantitative
measurement.
Water-soluble organic compounds were determined using a
GCMS QP2010 Plus gas chromatography-mass spectrometer
(GC-MS). The GC was equipped with a ame ionization detector
and an Rtx-5MS capillary column.
