The title reaction in toluene has been examined spectrophotometrically.The data are consistent with equations (1)-(3) (R = p-EtOC6H4). (1), (2), (3).The rate constants k₁ and k₃ are 56 +/- 2 dm³ mol^-1 s^-1 at 7 deg C and 6.2 * 10^-4 s^-1 at 25 deg C respectively.The equilibrium constant K₂ is 1570 dm³ mol^-1 at 25 deg C, and ΔH₂ = -22 +/- 4 kJ mol^-1.The activation parameters for the final step are ΔH<*> = 44 +/- 5 kJ mol^-1 and ΔS<*> = -160 +/- 15 J K^-1 mol^-1.
