The tridentate-phosphine stabilised cluster complexes M4(CO)9 (M = Rh, Ir) react with monodentate phosphines, L, to give M4(CO)8(L) (L = PPh3, Ph2PCH2CH2Si(OEt)3) in which the monodentate phosphine is coordinated to the apical metal atom.A similar reaction of Ru3(CO)10(dppm) (dppm = bisdiphenylphosphinomethane) with L gives Ru3(CO)9(L)(dppm).Immobilisation of these complexes, to give unique supported clusters, has been achieved either by treating M4(CO)9 and Ru3(CO)10(dppm) with phosphinated silica or phosphinated polystyrene-divinylbenzene or by treating M4(CO)8(L) and Ru3(CO)9((L)(dppm) (L = Ph2PCH2CH2Si(OEt)3) with silica.
