The effect of H2S partial pressure and of a basic nitrogen compound (diaminopropane) on the activity of a sulfided CoMo/carbon catalyst in hydrodeoxygenation were studied at 10-150 kPa H2S, 7 MPa total pressure, and at 270° and 200°C in the transformation of a mixture of guaiacol (GUA), ethyldecanoate (ED), and 4-methylacetophenone (MA) in p-xylene. An increase in H2S partial pressure decreased the average degree of reduction and uncoordination of the active sites and stopped the hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation pathways. H2S did not influenced the CoMo/C catalyst activity for the overall conversion of GUA. ED conversion was not influenced by H2S, and the selectivity in hydrogenated and decarboxylated products was slightly changed. MA was the only reactant molecule whose conversion was inhibited by H2S.
