Photocatalytic hydrogenation of ethylene (PHE) was studied on some bimetal-loaded TiO2 powders and on monometal loaded samples. The metals employed were Pd, Pt, Cu, and Ni.For the selective production of ethane, the combination of Pt and Cu as cocatalysts showed a collective effect in the titled reaction. When the selectivity of produced C2H6 to CH4 was improved by the optimum ratio of Pt to Cu on TiO2, the volume of the concurrently evolved H2 was diminished. This suggested that the Pt surface which was spatially controlled with the codeposited Cu afforded a desirable geometry for the photohydrogenation of C2H4.A possible reaction mechanism and the advantage of the composite surface of the bimetal-loaded TiO2 powders are discussed.
