compound 20 was obtained in 62% yield. In the same
way, treatment of 18 and 19 led to compounds 2 (65%)
and 3 (58%), which are identical to the natural products
macarangin and isomacarangin, respectively. The anti-
tumour activity studies for compounds 1–3 and 20 have
been carried out and will be published elsewhere.

In conclusion, we have accomplished the synthesis of two
natural products: macarangin (2) and isomacarangin (3).
We have also synthesised (+)-denticulaflavonol, the enan-
tiomer of the natural product. The absolute configuration
of (–)-denticulaflavonol has been established as well.
