A transmission electron microscope was used to study the influence of solution pH and temperature on the microstructure of nickel films obtained by electrodeposition. It was found that the solution pH and temperature affect the microstructure (density of dislocations and growth twins, and grain size) significantly. This microstructural modification was accompanied by a corresponding change in the ductility, current efficiency, and the hydrogen content of the deposits. These results can be rationalized by the strong tendency of nickel to be passivated by the adsorption of foreign species (hydrogen and hydroxide) present in the basic electrolyte during electrocrystallization.
