A series of disubstituted cyclopentane and cyclohexane deriva-
clei of 1,2-trans, 1,3-cis, and 1,4-trans disubstituted cyclohexanes
are deshielded compared to 1,2-cis, 1,3-trans, and 1,4-cis, respec-
tively. In 1,2 and 1,4-disubstituted cyclohexanes the diequatorial
arrangement corresponds to trans configuration and the 1,3 to
cis (Fig. 2). The shift differences are, on average, smaller for 1,3-

tives was investigated by comparison of the C shifts of their
substituted carbons. We observed a strong tendency of diequa-

torially substituted compounds to show deshielded C signals.
The implementation of these findings to the structural elucidation
of novel fluorinated carbocyclic nitriles enabled their complete
spectral assignment with the aid of DFT calculations. Especially,
[
12]
and 1,4- than for 1,2 substitution (up to 6.7 ppm). Cyclopentane
derivatives show the same trend (Table 1) although the conforma-
tional status of the two substituents is more complex compared to
cyclohexane derivatives, where equatorial and axial arrangements
are distinct.[

the comparison of calculated and experimental JFC coupling con-
stants enabled the final assignment. Thus, fluorinated carbocyclic
nitriles obey the general trend albeit in a less pronounced manner
than, for example, carbocyclic hydroxynitriles. These results en-
courage the configurational assignment of other diastereomeric
pairs of cyclohexanes and cyclopentanes by simple comparison of

is comprehensive; see References). Unless otherwise stated, the
spectra were recorded in CDCl3.

The fluorinated compounds 3p–7p (Trans-7p is not included
in Table 2 because data for the corresponding cis isomer was
not available) take exceptional positions in this series. The
assignment of the relative configuration was aggravated due
to synthetic reasons – elimination and retention of configuration

with the calculated values of the conformer ax/eq than with eq/ax

A comparison of calculated 13C shifts and 3JFC spin–spin
coupling constants with the experimental data indicates that
trans-3-fluorocyclohexanecarbonitrile(7p)onthecontrary, adopts
