Hydrothiolation of 4-chlorostyrene (CAS 1073-67-2) 1 with diphenyl disulfide (CAS 882-33-7) 67 in different reaction conditions
Iron-catalysed Markovnikov hydrothiolation of styrenes
Scheme 4
However, a possible redox reaction between the thiol and the iron center (2RSH+2Fe3+→RSSR+2H++2Fe2+) should not be discarded. A second experiment was conducted by adding pmethoxythiophenol 9 (1 equiv.) along with 4-chloros-tyrene land diphenyl disulfide 67 (0.5 equiv.; Scheme 5) and it was found that thiol exchange indeed occurs, even in the absence of iron(Il) or alkene( (Supporting Information, Scheme S2).
