A stereoselective synthesis of N-<(S)-ethoxycarbonyl-3-phenylpropyl>-L-alanine, a portion of the molecule of angiotensin converting-enzyme(ACE) inhibitors, by reductive amination utilizing catecholborane and further applications of the reaction to the synthesis of ACE inhibitors are described.
