Syntheses of two conformationally restricted analogues 3 and 4 of the angiotensin II receptor antagonists losartan (1) are described. Michael addition of imidazole-5-carboxaldehyde 8 to biphenylpropiolate 7 provides an efficient method for the skeletal construction of imidazo[1,5-α]pyridine derivatives.
