Ethers, ether-alcohols

Ethers are organic compounds characterized by an oxygen atom bonded to two alkyl or aryl groups. They are notable for their chemical stability and low reactivity towards many common reagents. Ethers find extensive use as solvents in various industrial processes, due to their ability to dissolve a wide range of organic and inorganic substances without undergoing significant chemical reactions themselves. Ether-alcohols, also known as glycol ethers, are a subclass of ethers where one of the alkyl groups is substituted with a hydroxyl group (-OH). These compounds combine the solvent properties of ethers with the hydrophilic characteristics of alcohols, making them useful in formulations requiring both water solubility and organic solvent capabilities. Ether-alcohols are commonly used in paints, coatings, cleaning products, and as intermediates in the production of resins and pharmaceuticals.
