Tosylate

Tosylates, also known as tosyl esters or tosylates, are organic compounds derived from the reaction of an alcohol or phenol with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (tosyl chloride). The resulting tosylate group is a sulfonate ester containing a p-toluenesulfonyloxy (-OSO2C6H4CH3) moiety bonded to the oxygen atom of the alcohol or phenol. Tosylates are widely used in organic synthesis as protecting groups for alcohols and phenols, due to their stability under a variety of reaction conditions and ease of removal. They are also valuable intermediates in the preparation of other organic compounds, including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Tosylates are typically good leaving groups in substitution reactions, facilitating processes such as nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions.
