The addition of acetylenes such as HCCH, HCCPh, or MeOOCCCCOOMe to to give 'dimetallated olefins' is catalysed by traces of acid or methanol but inhibited by a base: the 'dimetallated olefin' complex makes an interesting comparison with the vinylidene complex .
